The Pitch To Luke

Swarfega - Presentation

The Plot Of The Swarfega Music Video

The music video starts in a room with the band playing, cutting between the band and a mechanic in a garage. The mechanic then turns up the TV and a reverse zoom reveals that the band are the TV and that the mechanic and the band are both in the garage. The mechanic is still but we see him gradually getting angrier as he gets frustrated due to him being unable to fix the car seeing a close up of him cutting himself on the car. Before the disruption there were 30 second periods of the band and the mechanic cross cutting. Then we see the mechanic take the spanner he is using and take his anger out on the car (this means we would have to buy a beat up car) as the mechanic smashes up the car with the beat of the music. The songs to about uprising and he decides to rebel against his 9-5 job and social working class. At the end for last 30 seconds, the mechanic dives in to the TV leaving the garage, playing with the band. Using a tracking shot the audience follows him into the TV and we see him in a new light as a rock star which is what he really wants to be instead of having a 9-5 job he wish he could live the dream life.

Further Development Of Our Final Decision

After pitching our first idea to Luke, he said that he was happy with our idea for the moment but we had to develop it more such as where we were going to have it placed, and also see if we could get permission from Bertie's friend to use his garage. We also looked up Swarfega which is a car mechanics grease to give us an idea for our video. Following on from our initial idea, we have kept the original song and have got a back up incase this one falls through. The storyline is how an unpreveiled person with a broken home and a drug addicted mother has a steadly job and how he wants to succeed in life and how he remains and driven even though society is against him.

Initial Group Discussion

Amongst our group we discussed a few different ideas and we all liked two which are about rebellion
I have attatched a powerpoint that gives us our ideas and I will include below a link to the songs we are thinking of using.

Music Video Devising

Initial Idea Number 3

My third idea is 'I'm Yours' by Jason Mraz. Its quite an upbeat, happy song. I would have the singer walking through the twon singing and playing guitar. He would have a girl with him and would be singing to him sayingthat he is the girls property sort of thing.

Artists that he is like are James Morrison and Jack Johnson.

Jason Mraz fan sites are :

My Initial Idea Number 2

The second song I chose was 'Escape' by Muse. I chose this song because it is not so well known as it was released in 1999. I would make the video quite depressing. I will follow the lyrics quite closely, and the person would be building a hard image behind them because they are so self concious underneath. They bully people, and just feel depressed.

The websites that the Muse have are:

muse.mu/
www.facebook.com/muse
www.muse-fans.net/

Similar artists are 'Ours' and 'Radiohead'

My Initial Idea Number 1

My first idea was that we could use the song 'Good Life' by One Republic. The video I would think about doing is following closely to the lyrics.
It would be a good and sunny day so that it looks like life is good. The video would involve friends running around and people for example giving money to homeless people or helping somone. Everything that is happening in the video would be fun and happy.

Below is the music video to the song:

We decided not to do this idea as the song is two mainstream and it is not the best idea, therefore we have decided on other ones.

Music similar to one republic are Coldplay, Kaiser Chiefs and The Fray.

Popular Music And Sexuality

It is very difficult to analyse popular music without considering sexuality. Music is the way that humans can communicate their sexuality without actually taking of their clothes. Music is a physical and emotional form of expression - affecting us in our feeling and in our feet. Music is universal - no boundaries of language or culture

Sexuality - A Quick Working Definition

Human sexuality has five main elements:

  • Cognitive
  • Emotional
  • Physical
  • Moral
  • Social
Popular music with both rhythmic and verbal content, allows us to explore many aspects of sexuality. Lyrically, pop music is about giving and receiving love and affection, as well as physical aspect of sex, involving dancing both from performer and audience. Popular music bestows a sexual identity on fans, defining them through costume in social terms as goth, punk, raver steering them towards sexual attractiveness to those of a similar predilection.

Popular music allows a space for alternative sexualities. Those whose sexuality does not fit conventional modes.

Sexuality is very important in music, therefore when making my product I will consider all of this information on sexuality.

Background To The Music Industry And Some Basic Theory

This article has some key points about the music industry that will come in useful when making my music video.

Genre is the classification of text according to the style and content and form and manner of production. Of all the different forms of media, pop music is the most dependant on genre including different genres of text.

Music falls into the following categories:

  • Pop
  • Dance
  • R and B
  • Hip - Hop/ Rap
  • Rock
  • Punk
  • Country and Western
  • Folk
  • Jazz
  • Blues
  • Latin
  • Gospel
  • Reggae
  • New Age
Each of these categories contains sub - genres. However each of these genres has unique musical characteristics,  which can be associated with other factors such as clothing, hair and lifestyle. Each genre has specific places to perform such as nightclubs, radio stations, magazines and festivals.

Genre And Artist Image

Image is key for  music genre, as the artists look categorises them before they start singing or playing. Looks can be as generic as sound - it is hard to distinguish between hip hop videos. For example, Adele whose music draws from classic pop styles of 1960s and 1970s, is often photographed wearing classic retro clothing associating her with her role models Dusty Springfield or Aretha Franklin.

Genre And Sales

As well as publishing overall sales figures, the billboard chart is subdivided into no less that 43 different music genre categories
