Popular Music And Sexuality

It is very difficult to analyse popular music without considering sexuality. Music is the way that humans can communicate their sexuality without actually taking of their clothes. Music is a physical and emotional form of expression - affecting us in our feeling and in our feet. Music is universal - no boundaries of language or culture

Sexuality - A Quick Working Definition

Human sexuality has five main elements:


  • Cognitive
  • Emotional
  • Physical
  • Moral
  • Social
Popular music with both rhythmic and verbal content, allows us to explore many aspects of sexuality. Lyrically, pop music is about giving and receiving love and affection, as well as physical aspect of sex, involving dancing both from performer and audience. Popular music bestows a sexual identity on fans, defining them through costume in social terms as goth, punk, raver steering them towards sexual attractiveness to those of a similar predilection.

Popular music allows a space for alternative sexualities. Those whose sexuality does not fit conventional modes.

Sexuality is very important in music, therefore when making my product I will consider all of this information on sexuality.
